Yeah, as with Metal Slug 3 and KOF 94 Rebout, you can thank Sony for that. Unless SNK puts their ported Neo Geo games into a compilation of two or more games, Sony rejects it.

Even then, it's not a done deal. As Gekka No Kenshi 1 & 2 (The Last Blade 1 & 2) is a Japanese-only PS2 release at the moment, despite being a double-pack.

SCEA are retards.

...Magna Carta? What, you play a young Baron whose mission to gather all the Barons to force the king to sign a document that will keep the King from infringing on their power?

It's an Atlus RPG, and has nothing to do with the actual title. That shouldn't be surprising, it's japanese in origin, and they get away with titles like Legend of the Holy Protein.

Magna Carta is Korean in origin, not Japanese. There was a large review of the new PS2 game in the September 2005 issue of Play. The game was originally an MMORPG, but the PS2 game (subtitled "Tears of Blood") is a traditional single-player RPG.

And I believe when you say Legend of the Holy Protein, you're referring to Chouaniki: Protein Densetsu which is one of the oddest shmups I have ever played (hell, the whole series is bizarre).

October's a good month for PC games

And don't forget Serious Sam 2.
I too can't believe you missed out Quake 4

Oct. 6 - Brothers in Arms: Earned in Blood
Oct. 7 - UFO: Aftershock
Oct. 10 - Serious Sam 2
Oct. 18 - F.E.A.R, AoE III, Quake IV
Oct. 24 - Civ IV, Vietcong II
Oct. 25 - Call of Duty 2

heh, take it you're not big on PC games?
I'm pretty sure I'm missing a few as well, but those are the big ones that I'm aware know of.

Re: October's a good month for PC games

You're quite right, I am not big on PC games at all. I didn't intentionally miss them, I just didn't notice them. Feel free to create an independant "coming soon: PC games" post if you'd like.

Hmmm, I just noted that the US release of Chaos Field is absent from your list. Granted, I don't know if it really will get released on the 18th of October...

I didn't see it on the release lists I was referencing, but even if I did I may have left it off anyway. I've played Chaos Field and it was a big let down. There are far better shooters out in Japan that aren't getting ported, why'd they have to chose this one? Ikaruga, yes. Chaos Field, no way.

I don't understand this: "There are far better shooters out in Japan that aren't getting ported, why'd they have to chose this one?"

There are a whopping 4 shmups, count 'em, FOUR, on the Gamecube: Ikaruga, Chaos Field Expanded, Shikigami No Shiro 2 and Star Soldier (oddly enough, 3 are NAOMI ports).

Ikaruga has already been released here (no, it's not up to snuff with the DC port, but it's a fair conversion).

Shikigami No Shiro 2's US publishing rights are still held by XS Games, who originally were planning to release the GC and X-Box versions along-side the PS2 rev. For some reason, they chose to release only the PS2 version in the end.

Chaos Field Expanded has now been picked up by O~3. It's a decent enough game and a fairly competent port from the NAOMI/DC.

Star Soldier is the only one that nobody has looked at yet... and it's a budget title in Japan. There are worse ways to spend 2000 Yen, true. But this doesn't quite rate next to the other three.

So as you can see, O~3 didn't have a whole lot of choice in the matter of what to port.

Now, if you meant, why don't they localize some of the PS2 shmups that are available in Japan, well, ask XS Games.

XS Games originally were going to obtain the rights to localize both Dodonpachi: Daioujou and Psyvariar 2: The Will to Fabricate, but SCEA didn't give them the green-light. This has happened before. O~3 already knew what a pain SCEA were to deal with (we can only guess as what they had to go through in order to get the PS2 publishing rights for Alien Hominid), so they went to Nintendo's camp. And honestly, the US GC could use another shmup. Perhaps they'll try talking to Microsoft next, although, there isn't much on the Japanese X-Box to port either.

The problem here is definitely SCEA's archaic allowances of 2D-based software.

The point I was making is that Chaos Field was, at least in my opinion, not so good. It was just a bunch of boss battles, which may have seemed like a good concept but ended up being not fun. There are games out in japan that are better than never get released in the US, like Psyvariar 2 for XBox (or PS2 but yeah, SCEA sucks).

Yes, I'm sure that 2-D enthusiasts will be grateful for such a port, and it is nice that someone had the idea of actually bringing something different out for the Gamecube. On the other hand, I would think that these enthusiasts have more than just a Gamecube, and different doesn't always mean good.
